Montefalco Wine Tour
The region of Montefalco, within the Province of Perugia, is world renowned for the production of wines such as Sagrantino and Montefalco Rosso. The town of Montefalco is perched on a hilltop affording stunning views of the surrounding vineyards and olive groves and for this reason its surname is "the Balcony of Umbria". The growing of Sagrantino grapes to produce Sagrantino Docg wines is only allowed in this area of Umbria. Its name derives from the habit of some Franciscan friars to grow these grapes to produce a wine to be used for religious ceremonies.The Sagrantino is intense ruby red in color with purple tones, has a delicate scent recalling blackberries and a dry and harmonic taste.
The Wineries
Our wine tour will lead you with an expert Sommelier around the wineries of Montefalco, educating you about the important production of the famous wine and visit beautiful cellars.
Tenuta Castelbuono
The Carapace Winery within the Castelbuono Estate in Montefalco owned by the Lunelli (Ferrari) family has been built according to the idea of having a real treasure chest for wine.The Carapace winery is thus the first architectural work of great sculptor Arnaldo Pomodoro and the first inhabitable winery in the world: here people both work and live. This name derives from its unmistakable tortoise-shell shape, symbol of longevity and union of heaven and earth: after six years of works, this winery was opened in 2012 to visits and wine tasting; this unique work of art has a big dome covered with copper and engraved showing stripes recalling earth furrows. Well, this is a unique winery for unique wines.The Castelnuovo wine cellar's production of wines is:
- Carapace Montefalco Sagrantino Docg - Grape variety: Sagrantino, Aging: oak casks 24 months bottled 12 months;
- Lampante Montefalco Rosso Riserva Doc - Grape variety: Sangiovese 70%, Sagrantino 15%, Cabernet and Merlot, Aging: tonneaux and casks 18 months bottled 12 months;
- Ziggurat Montefalco Rosso Riserva Doc - Grape variety: Sangiovese 70%, Sagrantino 15%, Cabernet and Merlot, Aging: tonneaux 12 months bottled 6 months;
- Passito Montefalco Sagrantino Docg - a wine for meditation, made by semi-drying Sagrantino grapes on racks.
Cantina Scacciadiavoli
Situated amongst the beautiful Umbrian hills, along the famous Strada del Sagrantino ( Sagrantino Road), the Scacciadiavoli winery has always concerned itself with the production of wines of great character. The building where the wines are produced lies on a hill, with a vertical structure on four levels, of which one is below ground. The grape intake occurs on the top floor (at the level of the vines); the grapes are then moved to the floor below (second) by gravity-flow, where fermentation occurs. Stainless steel and wood containers for vinification are located on the second floor. On the ground floor there are tonneaux and large wooden barrels for the ageing of the Montefalco Rosso, and on the underground level there are oak barrels for the ageing of the Montefalco Sagrantino Secco and Passito wines.
